Envirotect begins construction Crystalactor® Phosphorus Removal/Recovery System

Facility will be able to meet less than 1 ppm discharge limit.

Sugarcreek, OH – award winning Guggisberg Cheese utilizing a state-of-the-art production facility discharges their wastewater to an activated sludge system where it is followed by a Membrane Bioreactor that was installed by Envirotect in 1984. Like many food producers, Guggisberg Cheese continues to face lower discharge requirements for their wastewater treatment system.

Guggisberg Cheese continues to lead the industry with both their manufacturing techniques and their commitment to the environment. The MBR installed in 1984 was one of the first applications in the area and has continued to meet very stringent effluent limits producing the highest quality of discharge available. Once again, Guggisberg Cheese has committed to looking beyond conventional technologies and has opted to install a Phosphorus Recovery System that would meet the limits and also be beneficial to the environment.

Envirotect has chosen, Procorp Enterprises and the Crystalactor Phosphorus Recovery system to meet their client’s, Guggisberg Cheese, new, <1 ppm Phosphorus wastewater discharge limit. Evaluation and comparison with conventional technology showed the Crystalactor to be both more cost effective and efficient. Specifically the Crystalactor has lower operating and maintenance costs and produces a pellet; that can be sold as fertilizer, instead of sludge.

Currently Guggisberg treats their wastewater with an Aerobic MBR. The effluent from this system will flow to an equalization tank before being sent to the first of two Crystalactor units. The first, slightly larger unit will reduce the phosphorus concentrations from 100 to 1 – 2 ppm. The effluent from the first reactor will flow to the second reactor for Phosphorus polishing, achieving <0.5 ppm. pH levels will be adjusted in this second reactor before final discharge.
